Surgery Service for Dogs

Surgery Service for Dogs

When your special pet needs surgery, it can be stressful for you and them. The supportive and skilled staff at Fairview Animal Hospital are here to help.

Being prepared is the best way to decrease your anxiety. You can prepare your dog in advance by considering pet insurance to help financially. Ensure your dog is up to date with vaccines ahead of time, ask about medications that they may be on, and if they need to be given anything the morning of surgery. You will be asked to withhold breakfast that day and to arrive early to the clinic. The less stressed that you are as the owner, the easier it will be for your dog.

Blood work will be run that morning to alert the veterinarian of any underlying condition that may cause us to postpone the surgery. Your dog will be fully monitored before, during, and after the procedure by two experienced Registered Veterinary Technicians and by the Veterinarian. Your dog will receive intravenous fluids which will help them to recover faster. Their body temperature, heart rate, EKG, respiratory rate, and blood pressure will be monitored closely and recorded. Pain medications will be chosen for each dog. Antibiotics may also be prescribed. Sterile equipment is always used. Discharge instructions will be explained in full, with a written copy given to you to take home. Your dog will be fed a small meal when they have awakened and taken outside to urinate and defecate. If your dog is on a specific food you are welcome to bring some with you so that we can use it for their first snack. You can also bring their favourite blanket to help them feel at ease in the clinic.

The staff at Fairview Animal Hospital understands your concerns. To help ease your mind, please know we have all these safeguards in place, Veterinarians and Registered Veterinary Technicians have many years of experience, and we treat every dog like we would treat our own will. Your dog will feel happy, safe, and comfortable during their day with us.

What types of surgical services do you provide for dogs

Our Veterinarians perform surgeries three days a week. We offer spays and neuters, gastrointestinal surgeries such as the removal of foreign bodies, and exploratories. We also offer bladder surgery to remove bladder stones, along with dental surgery, removal of lumps or masses, and soft tissue biopsies.

Do you specialize in any surgeries?

We do not specialize in any canine surgeries. For such cases, including orthopedics, we do not hesitate to refer you to a local veterinary surgeon, or to the Atlantic Veterinary College in PEI if necessary.

How to give your dog medication

If you need to give your dog medication, learning how to do it right will make the process easier both for you and your pup. Remember to always follow the instructions given by your veterinarian and be sure to administer the full amount of medication over the number of days instructed by your vet.
